The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has taken steps to simplify e-commerce by making it more accessible to non tech-savvy user.
Current platforms Exclude many
“Current e-commerce platforms, like Amazon and Swiggy, are often designed for tech-savvy users. These platforms exclude a significant section of the population, such as older generations or those unfamiliar with digital tools”, said Saransh Agarwal, Chief of Staff, ONDC.
What is ONDC?
ONDC, a unique initiative of the Government of India, aimed at promoting open networks and decentralized digital commerce. It seeks to empower small and medium-sized businesses to expand their customer base and reach new markets while reducing dependence on a few dominant e-commerce platforms.
Simplifying the shopping experience
“Consumers have to login, find a product, add to the cart and make payment through a complicated payment gateway structure. ONDC seeks to offer a simpler, more inclusive alternative, “said Agarwal. ONDC is working to widen digital commerce by deploying features like QR codes to simplify the shopping experience. It will ensure that even non-tech-savvy users and local vendors can participate, said Agarwal. “If one could make payments using QR codes, he could also shop using it”. The innovation will not just cater to the needs of non[1]tech savvy users but also will give choices to those who understand technology. “We are enabling choices for all. Everyone wants a different kind of experience” said Agarwal.
Variety is what makes India vibrant, we are just trying to replicate that in the digital world, said Agarwal. The existing e-commerce does not have an incentive to innovate. “Platforms like Amazon and Swiggy do not innovate assuming that a grandmother–a non-tech savvy person will order at best once a week. Even if she orders once, it’s a market”, said Agarwal.
